The Science of Getting Rich is a book written over 100 years ago by a man named Wallace Wattles. In it Wattles lays out the concepts of what we know today as the law of attraction. It is a way of acting, living, and thinking that is guaranteed to create wealth in your life. In spite of the clearly defined principles in the book many have a difficult time putting it all to use.

The law of attraction is a simple concept but it requires a mindset that many find difficult to establish and maintain. What if you had a way to make the practice instinctive, to make it a part of yourself so that you automatically live it by embedding it in such a way that you don’t have to think about it? When you awaken in the morning you go forth with a positive state of mind, a positive expectation, and thankfulness as called for by the law of attraction.

Hypnosis is a technique for influencing your mind by suggestion. Create positive suggestions and build a positive frame of mind. Repeat these suggestions over time and you will move from wherever you are into the frame of mind required to use the law of attraction. You will not only overcome but you will eliminate negative thought patterns that have sabotaged you up to this point. This is the general use of hypnosis.

Next take each of the 17 chapters of The Science of Getting Rich and create specific suggestions to make those chapters come alive in you. Chapter 1 is called "The Right To Be Rich." It is the perfect place to formulate suggestions to overcome any negative feelings that you might have about money or your right to have a lot of money. Your suggestion might be, "I have a right to be rich, I choose to be wealthy." You can use this as an affirmation, repeated to yourself in a waking state or you might relax yourself and say it under hypnosis for an even greater effect. Maximum results can be had by using the suggestion under both conditions.

Chapter 2 is called, "There Is A Science of Getting Rich." In this chapter we learn that getting rich is achieved by doing things in a "certain way." Our suggestion reinforces this in our mind causing us to embrace the belief and make it our own. And further, we need not have material wealth to achieve wealth; we need only do things in a "certain way." This becomes real as we reinforce it using affirmations and hypnosis.

So we continue through the book creating affirmations and suggestions for each chapter to make the book a part of our very being so that we don’t just approach it with head knowledge but with a deep understanding because it has become a part of us. Success follows this simple method as you move from chapter to chapter enhancing the words and their effects on your being. You will naturally be happy, naturally be positive, naturally be thankful and this is at the core of applying the law of attraction.

What The Law of Attraction Is Not

I keep reading bad information about the law of attraction in forums. The writers talk about holding wishful magical thoughts and then sitting back and waiting for magic to happen. So they claim this is a fraud, that magic doesn’t happen this way. I would agree that simple wishful thinking this way is a fraud but it is not the law of attraction.

The law of attraction calls on you to visualize your result, draw ideas about achieving it from the visualization, and to act on those ideas, and finally to repeat the loop daily. This is far from just thinking happy magical thoughts of things. I think if you consider this that it is actually a solid plan for achievement in any area.

These writers seem to have missed a key point about the law of attraction and the Science of Getting Rich, action is required. This is very clearly stated in the movie "The Secret" and in the book The Science of Getting Rich.

One of my favorite quotes from The Science of Getting Rich is: "By thought, the thing you want is brought to you; by action you receive it."

By action you receive it, that means doing something not sitting home and thinking happy thoughts. The happy thoughts and the thinking about it using visualization are done to trigger ideas about the action that you need to take to bring the desired result to you.

This process has been used by Denis Waitley to train Olympic athletes, this is something he wrote about in his best seller "The psychology of Winning." Waitley describes the process even though the term "law of attraction" wasn’t in vogue when he wrote the book, still he has all of the steps.

The same is true of the book "The Science of Getting Rich." This book is a treatise on the law of attraction even though the term is not used even once in the entire book. Still the steps are clearly laid out as the loop that was mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Many deride the law of attraction after never having understood it. They grab onto the idea of happy thoughts and wishful thinking and correctly realize that doing just this doesn’t work. However they have failed to see the complete process of the law of attraction, that you spin ideas off of the visualization, then you act on the ideas. Action, action, action is very clearly called for by all responsible teachers of the law.

Do the steps and repeat daily and soon results will follow. This is the law of attraction.

The Science of Getting Rich: Action Now

We always see signs that tells us to “ACT NOW”, “now is your chance to save 20%,” and so many other such advertisements which invade our society. Failing to act now is considered risky. We could miss out on a great opportunity. Well, Wallace D. Wattles wrote in his book, The Science of Getting Richer about the need to act in the moment. How could you expect to ever get rich if you did not act upon your desire to be rich? It was one thing to want it, but an entirely different matter to actually act upon your vision.

Wattles believed that man must act and behave in a certain way to become rich. First he must gain a mental image of being rich, hold it consistently, and detail it to the fullest. However, just visualizing it will only remain a thought. Without personal action, nothing will come of it. Man must take action and perform in accordance with the idea of being rich. In SGR, Wattles used many examples pertaining to business that illustrated his point about immediate action. He stated that if one “engaged in some business, and feel that it is not the right, …, do not wait …to get into the right business before you begin to act.”

He understood man well. While it seems so obvious that time is on its own schedule we still try to control the hands. We focus on the past and worry about the future. He wisely stated that man “cannot act in the past, and it is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future, for the future is not here yet. And you cannot tell how you will want to act in any future contingency until that contingency has arrived.”

Believing in your mental image that you know what you want and that you are taking action is the key to becoming rich. Wattles stated that even if you are in an uncomfortable situation, yet are doing everything in your power to move toward your goal, then given time you will reach your purpose. You just must remain steadfast and on course. Keep your purpose fixed and your mental image in tact. While you may feel discouraged because you are not in the right business, remember what want and keep clear of any distractions that may cloud your fixed purpose. The universe will respond in kind.

The movie "The Secret" has created a lot of attention on the law of attraction and along with it so much disappointment. The Secret gives some basics and an introduction to the law of attraction but falls far short of anyone being able to master it. Watching the secret you might come away with the idea that you just visualize the thing you want and it will magically appear. People have been doing that for years, it’s called day dreaming. The fact is The Secret really says a lot more than that about the law of attraction and I don’t intend to discount or detract from the importance of the movie. It is just that most people need more information to be able to use many of the ideas that The Secret introduced.

Rhonda Byrne, the creator of The Secret, has said that a copy of the Wallace Wattles success classic "The Science of Getting Rich" was given to her at a low point in her life and that it was the inspiration for the movie. The Science of Getting Rich is all about mastering the law of attraction but the fact is it never uses the words "law of attraction" but most experts on the law agree that this book is one of the best single sources about attaining mastery.
